On April 16, 2024, the United States Patent and Trademark Office issued U.S. Patent No. 11,962,710 B2 to Nicholas VandenBrekel — Systems and Methods for Generation of Energy-Backed Digital Units Stored in a Decentralized Ledger. In fifteen claims, it describes the apparatus and the method by which a metered increment of generated electrical energy becomes a uniquely hashed, traceable digital unit on a distributed ledger. It is, in plain terms, the gateway and toll booth patent for the tokenization of electricity.
The implication is structural. Every kilowatt-hour generated under the method becomes an auditable, transferable digital asset at the moment of its creation, a one-to-one correspondence between physical energy and digital property, sealed at the meter. The patent is assigned to Farad Technologies Group, LLC, of which VandenBrekel is Chief Executive Officer.
